Saturday July 18, 2026 at 3:00 PM

Wampanoag History on Nantucket Island with Elf Ahearn

Thursday July 30, 2026 at 6:00 PM

Elf Ahearn grew up as the child of archaeologists and brings a deep awareness of history to her fiction. She publishes historical romance. This reading will feature two short works of historical fiction set on Nantucket Island, focusing on the intersecting lives of the Wampanoag tribe and pre-1900 white Americans and English colonists.

"Written in the Water" is a love story that takes place in October 1843 at the crossroads of the declining whaling industry, failing due to the near extinction of whales, and the decline of the Wampanoag population on Nantucket Island.

"Call the Unnatural Heroes" is based on the true story of Assassamough, a Nantucket Wampanoag who became an English translator and adopted the Christian name John Gibbs and was accused of speaking the name of Massasoit, the Wampanoag Nation sachem who helped the pilgrims survive at Plymouth Rock. Massasoit’s son Metacomet, known as King Philip, claims John Gibbsʻs life. He agrees to accept a ransom in exchange for Gibbs’ life, but when the English colonists cannot collect a large enough amount King Philip threatens blood and mayhem.

Their forbidden love tore the world apart.
Now two broken gods might be the only ones able to heal it.

Haunted by his past and the evil forces he commanded, Noctis, once the God of Darkness, cannot forget Rada, the former Goddess of Light—and the queen who ruled at his brother’s side. Condemned to mortality, thought dead to the whole world, Noctis craves one last meeting …

Stripped of her magic and exiled for treason, Rada has built an idyllic new life on a farm at the edges of the realm. But her peace is shattered one stormy night when Noctis—the enemy who caused her downfall, the lover she betrayed in turn—appears at her door, wounded and desperate.

When a sinister attack reveals the powers of Chaos are stirring once more, Noctis’s dark past begins to unravel. As desire and duty entwine, Rada faces an impossible choice: Can she become the ally of the man who broke her heart to save everything she holds dear?

Reading and Q&A with Lorraine Ash

Saturday August 1, 2026 at 3:00 PM

Congratulations to Sparkle friend, memoirist extraordinaire, and award-winning author Lorraine Ash for her short memoir "Echoes of Summit Avenue," which appears in the collection 2026 Next Generation Short Story Awards Anthology of Winners. The story captures the cases, the drama, and the lessons in archetypal living she learned as a teen working in her late father’s law office. "Echoes" preserves her father’s remarkable spirit and the gritty, colorful Hudson County, New Jersey, landscape of the 1970s, now lost to the ether of time.

Lorraine will read, take questions, and share a writing prompt designed to help those who attend preserve a key person, place, or moment from their own lives. Paper and pens to be provided by The Sparkle.

Tickets are $24 and include a copy of the book; you may pre-pay or reserve your spot and pay at the door. You may also visit the Eventbrite link below to pre-order a book to be delivered anywhere in the continental United States ($34).

Fantasy Book Club: We Burned So Bright by TJ Klune

Thursday August 6, 2026 at 6:30 PM

We Burned So Bright follows an older queer couple on an end-of-the-world road-trip.

The road stretched out before them. No other cars, just the headlights on the blacktop. Above, the cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky….

Husbands Don and Rodney have lived a good long life. Together they’ve experienced the highest highs of love and family, and lows so low that they felt like the end of the world.

Now, the world is ending for real. A wandering black hole is coming for Earth and in a month everything and everyone they’ve ever known will be gone.

Suddenly, after 40 years together, Don and Rodney are out of time. They’re in a race against the clock to make it from Maine to Washington State to take care of some unfinished business before it’s all over.

On the road they meet those who refuse to believe death is coming and those who rush to meet it. But there are also people living their final days as best they know how–impromptu weddings, bright burning bonfires, shared meals, new friends.

And as the black hole draws near, among ball lightning and under a cracked moon in a kaleidoscope sky, Don and Rodney will look back on their lives and ask if their best was good enough.

Is it enough to burn bright if nothing comes from the ashes?

Fiction Book Club: Whistler by Ann Patchett

Thursday August 20, 2026 at 6:00 PM

Sparkle Fiction Book Club will be meeting on August 20th at 6:00 pm to discuss Whistler by Ann Patchett.

Pick up a copy in-store at 15% discount, or buy a copy through our affiliate links at Bookshop.org or libro.fm (for audiobook lovers).

Whistler is a story about two adults looking back over the choices they made, and the choices that were made for them. It’s a story about bravery, memory, the often small yet consequential moments that define our lives, and the endless stream of loss that in time comes for us all. Beautiful in its simplicity, it is ultimately about how love endures, and how the feeling of being known by one other person, even for a short period of time, can change everything.

Using Science in Poetry with Bryan Roessel

Sunday August 23, 2026 at 2:00 PM

Consider incorporating scientific ideas and images into your writing! Science can produce feelings of wonder or transcendence by emphasizing the vast scale of the natural world, or our deep connections to it -- for example, the idea that the atoms in our bodies were forged in stars that exploded before our planet formed. A scientific model can provide metaphors for our own personal life experiences -- for example, the collision of continents can become a way of thinking about falling in love. We will talk about where the matches and mismatches are, and how both can be useful in a poem. Choosing from a list of scientific models and surprising or striking scientific ideas, we will do a little research and then incorporate scientific imagery or use scientific models as framing devices or extended metaphor.

Bryan Roessel, science teacher and performance poet, is a founder of Rockland Poets. He has appeared in many places, including the Rockland Center for the Arts, West Nyack NY, 2026; the Family Meal Open Mic, Yonkers NY, 2024; and the White Plains Public Library Slam, White Plains NY, 2016; and has organized countless community poetry events.

Talking to Yourself: The Art of Writing Inner Dialogue with Lorraine Ash

Talking to Yourself: The Art of Writing Inner Dialogue with Lorraine Ash Class

Wednesday October 7, 2026 at 6:00 PM

This is an online workshop, meeting Wednesdays 6-8pm on October 7, 14, 21, and 28.

All memoir writing highlights our experiences (what happens in the world) and our behaviors (how we respond to the world). The space between them is the writer’s inner life—the place where their real voice talks, generates insights, uncovers false stories, and creates meaning. You’ll learn techniques to elicit and use that crucial inner voice to maximum effect. Perfect for memoirists and fiction writers at all levels.

Lorraine Ash works as a book editor and author coach specializing in all forms of autobiographical writing. She has penned two memoirs, Life Touches Life: A Mother's Story of Stillbirth and Healing and Self and Soul: On Creating a Meaningful Life. Fantasy Book Club: Wild Seed by Octavia Butler

Thursday July 9, 2026 at 6:30 PM

Join us for our monthly fantasy book discussion - on the first Thursday of each month, we meet to talk about our latest pick! Except this month, we moved it to July 9th because of Independence Day!

At this meeting, we'll be reading our July book club pick, Wild Seed by Octavia Butler.

Doro knows no higher authority than himself. An ancient spirit with boundless powers, he possesses humans, killing without remorse as he jumps from body to body to sustain his own life. With a lonely eternity ahead of him, Doro breeds supernaturally gifted humans into empires that obey his every desire. He fears no one--until he meets Anyanwu.

Anyanwu is an entity like Doro and yet different. She can heal with a bite and transform her own body, mending injuries and reversing aging. She uses her powers to cure her neighbors and birth entire tribes, surrounding herself with kindred who both fear and respect her. No one poses a true threat to Anyanwu--until she meets Doro.

The moment Doro meets Anyanwu, he covets her; and from the villages of 17th-century Nigeria to 19th-century United States, their courtship becomes a power struggle that echoes through generations, irrevocably changing what it means to be human.

Fiction Book Club: She Who Remains

Thursday May 7, 2026 at 6:00 PM

Rene Karabash's She Who Remains, translated by Izidora Angel, was shortlisted for the 2026 International Booker Prize--although that's not the only reason to read it! This story of a woman battling gender stereotypes takes place not long ago nor far away--Albania, early 2000s. A tradition of patriarchal domination, which dates to the 1500s and crushes women's independence and power, has led to a social class of "sworn virgins" who are permitted to own property and earn money to support their families, just like men, provided they never engage in sexual or romantic partnerships. Bekija's decision to become a sworn virgin sets off "a bloody and heartbreaking chain of events that shatters a family and destroys a cherished relationship, but also reveals how trauma can lead to vital, if uncomfortable, truths."

We've ordered paperbacks for the store, but they are backordered. We recommend grabbing the ebook at this Bookshop link.

Thursday April 30, 2026 at 6:00 PM

In honor of Poetry Month, we welcome Christine Potter for two mini workshops!

Okay, it’s evening, but spring is the morning of the year! This workshop looks at the aubade—the morning poem. Morning is an amazing time to write (your brain is all nice and clean from dreams and sleep), but writing about the morning in the evening can be just as good. We’ll look at aubades from Rumi, Billy Collins, and Mary Oliver, and you’ll go home with a new aubade all your own.

Sunday March 22, 2026 at 1:00 PM

Join us in welcoming Michael Tubridy, who with Robert Polner is the author of An Irish Passion for Justice: The Life of Rebel New York Attorney Paul O'Dwyer.

Born in County Mayo, Ireland, O’Dwyer cut a principled and progressive path through New York City's political machinery and America's reactionary Cold War landscape. He maintained a consistent left-wing politics and defense of accused Communists in the labor movement, which exposed him to sharp criticism within and beyond the Irish-American community. Even so, his fierce beliefs, loyalty to his brother William, who was the city's mayor after World War II, and influence in Irish-American circles also inspired respect and support. Recognized by his gentle brogue and white pompadour, he drove the discussion on many difficult domestic and international causes and, finally, enlisted then-future president Bill Clinton to bring an end to the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Michael is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in The New York Daily News, USA Today, The Irish Echo, Irish America, City and State NY, Vital City, L.A. Progressive, and The Recorder. A lifelong resident of Bergen County, NJ, he also frequently writes about Irish and Irish American history in his blog "A Boat Against the Current."

Author Talk with Ralph White and D. Z. Stone

Sunday November 23, 2025 at 3:00 PM

In the final two weeks of the Vietnam War, Chase Manhattan Bank sent Ralph White, a 27-year-old bank officer working in Bangkok, to Saigon. His assignment: keep the Saigon branch open as long as possible. With the North Vietnamese Army approaching, the Chase Vietnamese employees faced dire consequences for having worked for Americans. Asked if he were leaving them behind, Ralph committed to getting all the 113 Chase Saigon employees and their families out of the country. Getting Out of Saigon is Ralph’s eyewitness account of this illegal effort as tension in the doomed city built to the breaking point.

Orchids! Discussion and Potting Workshop

Orchids! Discussion and Potting Workshop Class

Sunday November 2, 2025 at 4:00 PM

Maybe you fell in love with your first Phalaenopsis a while back and, like some of us, have encountered via YouTube growers of more “exotic” orchids: cattleyas, oncidiums, cycnodes, and others. Challenge your grower’s hand with something new!

Join us for 60 to 90 minutes discussing and potting a selection of lovely exotics. We’ll talk about origins, care needs, and how we might accommodate them in our homes.

Orchids, pots, and medium will be provided. Depending on enrollment, attendees will go home with 2-3 plants. Varieties may include cycnodes, oncidium, cattleya, and phalaenopsis, but specifics will depend on nursery stock.

**UPDATE: Varieties will include Zygopetalum hybrids, one Oncidium hybrid, and one Cochleanthes species.

There will also be books, of course!

$50
You'll be asked to register with our website, which will allow us to record your enrollment.

Sparklers: One-Hour Workshop with Jeff Bens

Sparklers: One-Hour Workshop with Jeff Bens Class

Thursday October 2, 2025 at 6:00 PM

FINDING YOUR AUTHENTIC VOICE: Writing from the Emotional World of the Protagonist

In this one hour workshop, for writers of all genres and styles, we'll explore how to locate and write from our work's authentic, compelling voice. Voice arises naturally from the emotional world of our protagonist. We don't need to force it or even think it up.

We'll look at examples of voice from novels, short stories and a screenplay, then we'll practice the technique with our own work in progress or from a prompt, taking away a felt, intuitive approach to language, cadence, rhythm and structure that tells our stories, imagined or real, with earned momentum and genuine depth.

Thursday October 2 at 6pm
$10
You'll be asked to register with our website, which will allow us to record your enrollment.

Jeff W. Bens is author of the novels The Mighty Oak and Albert, Himself. Jeff's short fiction and essays are published widely. He teaches at Manhatanville University.

This event is funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
